Production Management

Peter Evans started his full time career in the entertainment arts in January 1969 as a junior member of the lighting department at GTV9.  During the era when GTV produced the best in live variety and drama, Peter gained wide experience in lighting sets and performers, as well as working in the newly-developed field of music industry lighting.  In early 1972 he left to pursue a short career in rock-and-roll culminating in the design and operation of all stage lighting for the first three Sunbury music festivals in Victoria.

In late 1972 Peter re-joined GTV9 in the audio department, working on such productions as the Don Lane Show, Hey Hey It’s Saturday and The Sullivans.  In 1980, he established his own business Capital Sound, recording sound for radio and television commercials and providing outside broadcast sound facilities to the television networks.  In addition, he toured theatrical sound for such productions as Dance Theatre of Harlem.  He re-joined GTV9 in 1984 for The Bert Newton Show and, when that finished, continued to work as a freelance sound engineer for the major networks on both day-to-day production and special events such as Carols by Candlelight, the opening telecast for the Bicentennial Year, and Expo 88.

In 1990 Peter made the change to the corporate audiovisual industry with Intercity Hire (later Gearhouse Melbourne), becoming first Operations Manager and then Production Manager.  In January 2000 he celebrated thirty years in the entertainment industry as Production Manager for the Baptist World Conference providing sound, lighting and vision for an audience of 9000, with up to 300 performers delighting audiences each evening.  He continued this level of work with the successor to Gearhouse Melbourne, Solution RED.

Interspersed with this production work, Peter spent three years working for the Historic Places Section of the now Victorian Department of Environment & Primary Industry, carrying out surveys of historic sites and producing heritage assessments as part of the Regional Forest Agreement process.  The writing of numerous reports, papers and books honed Peter’s already extensive research and assessment skills.

In 2008 Peter transitioned to retirement, working three days a week in the Steam Operations Department at Sovereign Hill, where he operated a range of steam engines and boilers as well as contributing his research and assessment skills as part of the preparation of conservation plans.

Peter retired from full-time work in March 2014, and now offers his services to clients on a part-time basis.
